Ingrid Newkirk

We are all animals

We are all animals!

https://www.peta.org/

PETA president and cofounder Ingrid Newkirk has led the world’s largest animal rights organization for more than 35 years. Her passion and dedication to making this world a better place for all living beings has inspired countless others to do what they can to help animals.
As PETA’s president, Ingrid has spoken internationally on animal rights issues—from the steps of the Canadian Parliament to the streets of New Delhi, India, and from the drowning tanks of Taiwan to the halls of the U.S. Congress.
Ingrid was born in Surrey, England, and lived in Europe until she was 7 years old, when she and her parents moved to New Delhi, where her father worked as a navigational engineer and her mother volunteered for Mother Teresa and various charities. Ingrid’s early volunteer experiences—packing pills and rolling bandages for people who were suffering from leprosy, stuffing toys for orphans, and feeding stray animals—informed her view that anyone in need, including animals, is worthy of concern.
Until she was 21, Ingrid had given no thought to animal rights or even vegetarianism. In 1970, however, when she and her husband were living in Maryland and she was studying to become a stockbroker, a neighbor abandoned some kittens and Ingrid decided to take them to an animal shelter. This was a life changing-experience for Ingrid and led to her first job working in behalf of animals—cleaning kennels and investigating cruelty cases. Peter Singer’s book Animal Liberation and Ingrid’s experiences in that job and later on—including finding a fox and a squirrel caught in steel traps, finding a pig left to starve on a farm, and inspecting laboratories and circus acts for the government—made her realize that there needed to be an organization like PETA.
Ingrid has also served as a deputy sheriff, a Maryland state law enforcement officer with the highest success rate in convicting animal abusers, the director of cruelty investigations for the second-oldest humane society in the U.S., and the chief of animal disease control for the Commission on Public Health in Washington, D.C.
Under Ingrid’s leadership, legislation was passed to create the first-ever spay-and-neuter clinic in Washington, D.C. She coordinated the first arrest in U.S. history of a laboratory animal experimenter on cruelty charges and helped achieve the first anti-cruelty law in Taiwan. She spearheaded the closure of a Department of Defense underground “wound laboratory,” and she has initiated many other campaigns against animal abuse, including ending General Motors’ car-crash tests on animals.
Since it was founded, PETA has exposed horrific animal abuse in laboratories, leading to many firsts, including canceled funding, closed facilities, seizure of animals, and charges filed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. PETA has also closed the largest horse-slaughter operation in North America, convinced dozens of major designers and hundreds of companies to stop using fur, ended all car-crash tests on animals, cleaned up wretched animal pounds, helped schools switch to alternatives to dissection, and provided millions of people with information on vegetarianism, companion animal care, and countless other issues.
Ingrid Newkirk’s biography shows that she is an abolitionist who remains committed to the idea that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.

Bianca Taylor

Vegan for the animals, & the booty gains

Vegan Fitness Q&A

http://www.biancataylorfitness.com

My name is Bianca Taylor, and I am a certified personal trainer, also certified in plant-based nutrition. I went vegan in 2014, after competing in back to back bikini bodybuilding competitions and struggling with anorexia.
Growing up I was a competitive dancer and often struggled with my body image. I’ve always had a curvy structure and would feel insecure about my body because of the constant push from the media to be thin. I wad self-conscious about my hips and thighs and lack of abdominal muscles.
When I was 19 I decided to start weightlifting and eating healthier. My first trainer put me on a basic “chicken and broccoli” style diet and showed me my way around the weight room. I still wasn’t getting the results I desired, so I decided to prep for a bikini competition. I thought the strict structure and timeline would push me to take my body to the next level. I ended up on a low-carb diet for months, all through my bikini competition prep. After weeks of low carb dieting, I would compete in my bikini competition with a super low body fat percentage. As soon as I would step off stage, I would binge on fast food, sweets, and everything that I had restricted myself from for weeks. The binge would physically make me sick and next day I would feel extremely guilty and go back to my very strict low-carb diet, that left me hungry, unhappy, and unenergized. This unhealthy cycle of starve and binge became routine for me and warped my concept of food more and more. My weight fluctuated throughout the bikini prep seasons, and I didn’t have any idea how to have a healthy and fit lifestyle that I could maintain year round.
I thought that the only way to be lean and fit was to eliminate carbs, since that is what the diet and fitness industry advertises.
After competing in my last bikini competition, I fell into a deep depression and struggled to have any type of normal relationship with food. I was down to nearly 100 lbs, where as my normal weight was around 125-130 lbs. I had lost a lot of muscle mass that I had worked so hard for. I was terrified of carbs and fats, and stuck to eating a minuscule amount of chicken and veggies.
One day while cooking chicken, I looked down at my puppy and had a realization that changed my life. I suddenly lost my appetite and began researching a plant-based diet. I was shocked by all of the information I can across about the agriculture industry. I went vegan that day and decided to dive into learning about plant-based nutrition. I learned that carbs weren’t the enemy, and that you can have a delicious and flexible lifestyle while working towards your goals.
I studied plant-based nutrition via eCornell alongside personal training from ISSA, so that I could help other people who wanted to have a healthy, vegan lifestyle and get fit. Over the past few years, I had trained with and alongside Olympians and professional bodybuilders, professional mixed martial artists, and other specialists that have also taught various train methods.
Since going vegan, I have gained much muscle and healed my relationship with food. I no longer stress over carbs but rather utilize them to fuel workouts. I spend my energy helping others and promoting something I am so passionate about. I never thought that plant-based diet would allow me to overcome anorexia, but it did. It’s made me stronger and healthier than ever, and taught me REAL nutrition.
I did have to unlearn what I thought I knew about dieting for fitness, but 4 years later, I can gladly say it has been the best decision of my life.

Jayde Nicole is a vegan, environmentalist and animal activist.
Jayde seeks to educate people on the seriousness of protecting our environment, our oceans and the animals we share this planet with. She participates in and organizes beach & ocean clean ups, volunteers at the marine mammal care center, and educates people on how to reduce their impact on our environment through social media.
Jayde created her dog rescue, EDL Foundation in 2013 but her love of all animals has been with her for her entire life. At the age of five she informed her mother in a way only a five year old can do, that she would no longer be eating meat, and so began her path to help as many animals as she could. Her move from small-town Port Perry, Ontario to Los Angeles, California, which is overwhelmed with dog shelters, helped to focus her efforts towards helping dogs. EDL seeks to educate people on pet population control, animal adoption, and proper care. They rescue dogs abandoned and neglected at kill shelters as well as homeless and displaced  pets. EDL rehabilitates these dogs and then helps find them their forever homes.
