Vegan for the animals, & the booty gains |
Vegan Fitness Q&A |
http://www.biancataylorfitness.com |
Vegspiration Tent – 4:15 PM to 5:05 PM |
![]() My name is Bianca Taylor, and I am a certified personal trainer, also certified in plant-based nutrition. I went vegan in 2014, after competing in back to back bikini bodybuilding competitions and struggling with anorexia. Growing up I was a competitive dancer and often struggled with my body image. I’ve always had a curvy structure and would feel insecure about my body because of the constant push from the media to be thin. I wad self-conscious about my hips and thighs and lack of abdominal muscles. When I was 19 I decided to start weightlifting and eating healthier. My first trainer put me on a basic “chicken and broccoli” style diet and showed me my way around the weight room. I still wasn’t getting the results I desired, so I decided to prep for a bikini competition. I thought the strict structure and timeline would push me to take my body to the next level. I ended up on a low-carb diet for months, all through my bikini competition prep. After weeks of low carb dieting, I would compete in my bikini competition with a super low body fat percentage. As soon as I would step off stage, I would binge on fast food, sweets, and everything that I had restricted myself from for weeks. The binge would physically make me sick and next day I would feel extremely guilty and go back to my very strict low-carb diet, that left me hungry, unhappy, and unenergized. This unhealthy cycle of starve and binge became routine for me and warped my concept of food more and more. My weight fluctuated throughout the bikini prep seasons, and I didn’t have any idea how to have a healthy and fit lifestyle that I could maintain year round. I thought that the only way to be lean and fit was to eliminate carbs, since that is what the diet and fitness industry advertises. After competing in my last bikini competition, I fell into a deep depression and struggled to have any type of normal relationship with food. I was down to nearly 100 lbs, where as my normal weight was around 125-130 lbs. I had lost a lot of muscle mass that I had worked so hard for. I was terrified of carbs and fats, and stuck to eating a minuscule amount of chicken and veggies. One day while cooking chicken, I looked down at my puppy and had a realization that changed my life. I suddenly lost my appetite and began researching a plant-based diet. I was shocked by all of the information I can across about the agriculture industry. I went vegan that day and decided to dive into learning about plant-based nutrition. I learned that carbs weren’t the enemy, and that you can have a delicious and flexible lifestyle while working towards your goals. I studied plant-based nutrition via eCornell alongside personal training from ISSA, so that I could help other people who wanted to have a healthy, vegan lifestyle and get fit. Over the past few years, I had trained with and alongside Olympians and professional bodybuilders, professional mixed martial artists, and other specialists that have also taught various train methods. Since going vegan, I have gained much muscle and healed my relationship with food. I no longer stress over carbs but rather utilize them to fuel workouts. I spend my energy helping others and promoting something I am so passionate about. I never thought that plant-based diet would allow me to overcome anorexia, but it did. It’s made me stronger and healthier than ever, and taught me REAL nutrition. I did have to unlearn what I thought I knew about dieting for fitness, but 4 years later, I can gladly say it has been the best decision of my life. |

![]() Four sisters, four-part vocal harmonies, ten musical instruments (and growing) and four prolific songwriters all adds up to – DARDEN! Selah (20), Clarah (19), Havilah (17), and Tabithah (16). Darden is an alternative vocal group from Fullerton, California. As four of six children, the girls began singing at an early age, traveling in an RV across America with their parents. Soon, the girls began seeking out their own opportunities to develop their talents as singers, songwriters, and musicians. Selah plays the violin and piano. Clarah plays acoustic guitar, bass, piano, and ukulele. Havilah plays guitar, mandolin, and ukulele. Tabithah, the youngest, plays the up-right bass, acoustic bass, electric bass, and ukulele. Most recently they have honed their vocal style which reflects their influences – a hybrid of Folk, Americana, Pop, Country, and Blue Grass, creating a distinctive original sound dubbed Alternative Americana. With a vocal style reminiscent of The Eagles and the crossover potential of bands like Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers, and the The Zac Brown Band, Darden is carving their own lane through the current musical landscape. Their musical statement, built on a foundation of great songs, a down to earth image, and musical talent well beyond their years, is a refreshing antidote to today’s music scene. |

Furthering the message of her powerful and persuasive TedEx Talk, “Olympic Level Compassion,” that led to her selection as one of “The 20 Badass Veg Women Who Are Making History” by ChooseVeg, Bausch launched her non-profit animal protection organization, Compassion Champs, in March of 2017. Never one to shy away from facing staggering odds – just like she did in the 2012 London Games while riding for Team USA, whose unlikely and triumphant story is chronicled in the Netflix documentary “Personal Gold” – her outfit’s latest initiative is the disruption of the dairy milk industry through an Olympic athlete-driven social campaign called Switch 4 Good. The inaugural Switch 4 Good commercial aired on NBC during the 2018 Olympic Winter Games closing ceremonies and also on ABC during the Academy Award’s broadcast. View the commercial at www.Switch4Good.org. A former world record holder, eight-time U.S. National Champion on the road and track, and a cycling color commentator on television, Bausch was compelled to adopt a compassionate plant-based lifestyle after seeing an exposé about the routine cruelty of factory farming. She trained for and competed in the Olympics on a plant-based diet. Now retired from professional cycling and armed with a degree in Plant Based Nutrition from eCornell University, she speaks passionately around the world as the voice of farm animals, spreading her message about the numerous benefits – humane, nutritional and environmental – of plant-based eating as a lifestyle choice for athletes and non-athletes alike. |

Ingrid Newkirk – PETA president and co-founder |
We are all animals |
We are all animals! |
https://www.peta.org/ |
Vegspiration Tent – 2:15 PM to 3:10 PM |
![]() PETA president and cofounder Ingrid Newkirk has led the world’s largest animal rights organization for more than 35 years. Her passion and dedication to making this world a better place for all living beings has inspired countless others to do what they can to help animals. As PETA’s president, Ingrid has spoken internationally on animal rights issues—from the steps of the Canadian Parliament to the streets of New Delhi, India, and from the drowning tanks of Taiwan to the halls of the U.S. Congress. Ingrid was born in Surrey, England, and lived in Europe until she was 7 years old, when she and her parents moved to New Delhi, where her father worked as a navigational engineer and her mother volunteered for Mother Teresa and various charities. Ingrid’s early volunteer experiences—packing pills and rolling bandages for people who were suffering from leprosy, stuffing toys for orphans, and feeding stray animals—informed her view that anyone in need, including animals, is worthy of concern. Until she was 21, Ingrid had given no thought to animal rights or even vegetarianism. In 1970, however, when she and her husband were living in Maryland and she was studying to become a stockbroker, a neighbor abandoned some kittens and Ingrid decided to take them to an animal shelter. This was a life changing-experience for Ingrid and led to her first job working in behalf of animals—cleaning kennels and investigating cruelty cases. Peter Singer’s book Animal Liberation and Ingrid’s experiences in that job and later on—including finding a fox and a squirrel caught in steel traps, finding a pig left to starve on a farm, and inspecting laboratories and circus acts for the government—made her realize that there needed to be an organization like PETA. Ingrid has also served as a deputy sheriff, a Maryland state law enforcement officer with the highest success rate in convicting animal abusers, the director of cruelty investigations for the second-oldest humane society in the U.S., and the chief of animal disease control for the Commission on Public Health in Washington, D.C. Under Ingrid’s leadership, legislation was passed to create the first-ever spay-and-neuter clinic in Washington, D.C. She coordinated the first arrest in U.S. history of a laboratory animal experimenter on cruelty charges and helped achieve the first anti-cruelty law in Taiwan. She spearheaded the closure of a Department of Defense underground “wound laboratory,” and she has initiated many other campaigns against animal abuse, including ending General Motors’ car-crash tests on animals. Since it was founded, PETA has exposed horrific animal abuse in laboratories, leading to many firsts, including canceled funding, closed facilities, seizure of animals, and charges filed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. PETA has also closed the largest horse-slaughter operation in North America, convinced dozens of major designers and hundreds of companies to stop using fur, ended all car-crash tests on animals, cleaned up wretched animal pounds, helped schools switch to alternatives to dissection, and provided millions of people with information on vegetarianism, companion animal care, and countless other issues. Ingrid Newkirk’s biography shows that she is an abolitionist who remains committed to the idea that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. |

![]() Nathan Runkle is the founder and president of Mercy For Animals. Raised on a farm in rural Ohio, Nathan has long had a deep connection with farmed animals. After a local farmed animal abuse case involving a piglet slammed headfirst into a concrete floor during an agricultural project at a nearby high school, Nathan founded MFA to give “food” animals a much-needed advocate in his local community. Since founding MFA over a decade ago, Nathan has overseen the organization’s growth into a leading national force in the prevention of cruelty to farmed animals and promotion of compassionate food choices and policies. A nationally recognized speaker on animal advocacy, factory farming, and veganism, Nathan has presented at colleges, conferences, and many other forums from coast to coast. Through his work with MFA, Nathan has been an outspoken advocate for animal rights, featured in hundreds of television, radio, and newspaper interviews, including on ABC’s World News Tonight, Nightline, and 20/20, CNN, and National Public Radio, and inUSA Today, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Chicago Tribune. Nathan works closely with MFA’s diverse group of members, supporters, and employees to develop and fulfill objectives within the organization’s four areas of focus: education, legal advocacy, corporate outreach, and undercover investigations. Nathan has worked alongside elected officials, corporate executives, heads of international organizations, academics, farmers, celebrities, and film producers to pass landmark farmed animal protection legislation, raise public awareness about vegetarianism, and implement animal welfare policy changes. VegNews magazine has recognized both MFA and Nathan for making substantial contributions to the vegetarian movement, naming Nathan one of the “25 Most Fascinating Vegetarians” and one of the country’s “Top 20 Activists Under 30 Years Old,” and twice naming MFA “Non-Profit of the Year.” In 2009, at the age of twenty-five, Nathan became the youngest person ever inducted into the US Animal Rights Hall of Fame.

We believe all beings are different but equal and deserve equal love & rights. We have lots of different fur, feather, and scale babies here at the sanctuary. Many of them come from animal shelters, cases of neglect, saved from slaughterhouses, and even animal testing laboratories. We are so grateful for our supporters, volunteers, and donors. Together we are showing the world what it means to respect all life. Our goal is to expand the sanctuary so we can help both humans and animals by providing psychotherapy at the sanctuary, by licensed therapist, where not only would the guidance of a therapist help heal humans but also adding some pig belly rubs and turkey cuddles. He is a 54-year-old vegan athlete (#veganhockeyplayer) who trains and competes with elite players more than 30 years younger, an average of six inches taller and 60-100 pounds heavier than him. Fitness is his super power. The athletes he trains with and competes against struggle to keep up with the vegan powerhouse. Whether on the ice, bike or in the gym, his training partners have always been elites, pros and Olympians because his energy, enthusiasm, heart and hustle enable him to push them to the limit. “Rarely can I be the most-skilled player on the ice, but I can be the fittest. I outlast, outwork and out hustle my competition,” said Scott, who relies on his plant-based diet to keep him flying and recovering fast as well as to try to avoid the heart disease and cancers that run in his family.
Professionally, Scott is a creative music, sports and entertainment public relations executive who began representing vegan/animal nonprofit organizations a couple years ago. “I live and work my passions 24/7 thus it’s important that my public relations practice be in alignment with my core values.” A captivating storyteller as a writer, he pens an informative monthly column for the Switch4Good website debunking myths and confronting issues common to vegan athletes. |

We believe you deserve happiness, respect, and love. And we’re determined to give you the tools to create those feelings in every crevice and cranny of your existence. Ready to “HOOP” to it? 😉 |
